Teacher Stress

  • Students’ challenging behavior, such as EBD students often display, is one of the most frequent contributors to teachers feeling stressed (Larrivee, 2012, 225-227; Turk, Meeks & Turk 1982). 
  • Teachers' stress is associated with psychological symptoms such as: emotional exhaustion, anxiety, depression, burnout, anger and job dissatisfaction (Larrivee, 2012, 212-213). 
  • Approximately 90% of teachers suffer from job-related stressors.
  • Additionally, 95% of teachers express the need for stress management courses (Truch, 1980). 
  • Roughly 50% of new teachers leave within the first five years of employment (Ingersoll, 2003). 
  • Job related stress and ineffective stress management skills are frequently cited as the main cause for teachers to part with their profession (Darling-Hammond 2001; Montgomery and Rupp 2005). 
  • Replacing teachers due to such attrition is costly (Lantieri 2011, p. 269) and negatively impacts student learning outcomes (Murray 2005).

To counteract stress & the feeling of burnout in school communities as well as increase teacher retention we developed a comprehensive model of support aiding teachers of students with challenging behavior to effectively manage stressors in the classroom.

This model is called “Guided Journaling for Teachers”. 
Our program is currently being tested in a controlled study for long-term effects on teachers' stress reduction.
